Although this is the temple of Hatshepsut, don't
expect to see any images of her face. After her
death, her husband Tuthmosis 4, who had been
involuntarily living in her shadow, took revenge.
All images of her face, and even her cartouches
(name tag written in hieroglyphs) here destroyed.
The job was done so well that Hatshepsut would be
forgotten for more than 3,000 years. Only hard
archeaological work would bring her memory back.
There is one imagery which is quite unique here,
the one depicting her journey to Punt (probably
modern Somalia) where she collected myrrh trees
which was brought home to Egypt and planted on the
1st Terrace of this temple. The story is unfolded
to the south of the highest ramp. |
